Old dirt bikes are just the best.

Can confirm. Mine saw feeling especially peppy today. Idk if I just had a strong tail wind or what, but it was cruising at 62mph on the highway. Which is normally about it’s top end. I actually hit 70 at one point. Didn’t even think it could do that
I also spent some time doing emergency stops from 55, did 5 or 6 in a row, then working on stops while turning. It’s amazing how quick even my 37 year old bike can stop with no drama

Not bad for a 200, mine’ s a 600 so 70 mph is a breeze, the speedo says 5th gear will take me up to 100. I’m not super keen on finding out if that’s accurate although I’ve been up to 80 and it handled it well.
I just rebuilt the caliper and drum mechanism on this one because both were sticking slightly, now that they’re in proper working order I’m pretty impressed with how well this pig comes to a halt .

So I had to go out of town the way I came I earlier. Boy was there a head wind. I could barely maintain 55mph. lol. And once again combing back into town it was humming right along at 60+. It’s amazing what wind will do when you only have 18hp at best.
I’m still considering an XR650l as my next bike. Good to know they have all the power you need to stay on the highway. If you’re older 600 can do it an 650 should too. Probably not the best for freeway use tho lol.
I haven’t decided if I’ll replace the XT or get a more highway friendly bike, and keep the XT for offroad, and buzzing around town. More power, more cylinders, and much more cargo space are all things is is like to have, but I don’t want to give up off-roading ability.

If you’ve got the room and the budget I’d keep the XT (or replace with the XR650L) and get a dedicated road bike. They’re two very different types of riding and I think it’s best to have tools tailored to the job. My road bike is an ‘06 Yamaha Warrior 1700 and I absolutely love it . This thing will run 80+ all day long (100 miles at a time) comfortably and makes long trips or high speed runs a breeze.
I’ve added bags/luggage rack since this picture for more storage.
The XL still pulls a little double duty but is mostly used for tootling around town and exploring gravel roads in the area. I’ve also got an ‘87 XR600R which I’m going to try and use for dedicated hare scrambles and trail riding. I’m also looking for an old 2 stroke enduro because I’ve always wanted one.

I don’t think I’d want a bike that big. But the medium weight cruisers are what is been looking at most. Honda Shadow, Yamaha Bolt, there a real nice dark green Suzuki VZ800 which I think is also call a Marauder, near me I might try to throw a leg over. The Honda PC800 is one a like a lot too.
I’m not sure if I want to go straight up cruiser or more of a Sport tourer. I think I need to take my buddies ST1100 for a real ride now that I have more experience.

It is admittedly a big bike, but living in SD with lots of open highways and 80mph interstates it’s exactly what I wanted. Low slung, long, gobs of low-mid range power, and fast. One plus to this particular bike is it s aluminum frame and suspension components derived from the R1. I t comes in at 606 lbs dry so it’s a relative lightweight in terms of big cruisers, and it handles far better than a bike this big has any right to.
I do love midsize cruisers though , I had an 883 Sportster for a while and it’s one of my favorite bikes I’ve ever owned. I’ve spent some time on Shadows and a Bolt and enjoyed them both. People rave about the 750 Shaddow, but honestly it’s a dog, go for the 1100.
I can understand the appeal of sport touring bikes and know a couple people who’ve owned and loved them, but they have absolutely zero appeal to me for some reason. I see them as bland and uninspired, the crossover of motorcycles (except unlike crossovers they’re proper fast and handle great), but don’t let my preferences sway your decision.
